Bhaktapur district, located in the eastern part of Kathmandu valley, is the smallest among the seventy-five districts of Nepal. The district, with Bhaktapur as its district headquarters, covers an area of 119 km² and has a population (2001) of 225,461.

Municipalities and VDCs

Bhaktapur and Madhyapur Thimi are the only municipalities in the district, while there are no metropolitan cities. The twenty-one VDCs include Bageswori, Balkot, Balkumari, Bode, Changunarayan, Chapacho, Chhaling, Chitpol, Dadhikot, Duwakot, Gundu, Jhaukhel, Kautunje, Lokanthali, Nagadesh, Nagarkot, Nankhel, Sipadol, Sirutar, Sudal, and Tathali.
